Adventure Travelers Society History
Waaaaay back in the last century there were a couple of adventure-seeking young ladies who decided that the world needed an organization that met their discerning criteria. It had to:
-
•Go to cool places;
-
•Offer trips that were active and fun (No Blue Hair Bus Trips!);
-
•Provide an environment for people to get together and plot their next adventure; and
-
•Employ local staff whenever possible to help improve the lives of those that hosted our travelers.
From this, the Adventure Travelers Society was born. It flourished, with clubs starting in several cities, and grew to the point where the social clubs decided to run their own local / social outings (we still provide all their great trips). The clubs are now their own not-for-profit entities, so if you’re looking for a group of people to hang and travel with contact us and we’ll put you in touch with a club nearby.
Our Philosophy
We strive to offer excellent trips to exciting destinations all over the globe. Go ahead – use us to attain passport stamps on all the continents or hoof through your favorite historic cities. You’ll learn more on one of our trips than in all of your history, geography, and social science classes combined!
We love not just our destinations, but also the people you’ll meet along the way. Shop with our friends in Thailand to haggle for the best price, dine with our sailing crew on remote Greek islands as the sun sinks into the distant sea, hike through the village of our African guides where you’ll meet mothers in their kitchens and kids on the soccer fields, or roll up your shirtsleeves in our friends’ Italian homestead, keeping your glass of wine nearby as you sample home pressed olive oil.
We don’t offer the cheapest trips out there, but we won’t nickel-and-dime you at your destination. Don’t you just hate when you buy a cheap trip and discover that it cost you twice the price once you’ve added in all the tours and activities not included in the original price? You’ll get tons of things included on most of our trips so that your spending money can be used for stockpiling fun memorabilia to bring home.
We give back to our hosts whenever we can. Your trip price may include a donation to schools in need, environmental programs, or support staff safety education. It’s all good!
We want you to learn… a new skill, or perhaps a bit of forgotten history. That’s why every now and then you’ll see opportunities to try your hand at kayaking, your legs at mountaineering, or your lungs at scuba diving. And just imagine the thrill of cruising the African vistas with a Hemingway expert in your safari vehicle telling tales of Papa’s visits. All of our trips include a chance to learn about the people, history, and culture of each destination so come join us and have a blast while you learn something new!
Our goals: friendship, discovery, and good will.
